We help people suffering from joint related pain. More often than not arthritis is something that comes through our door, whether it’s knee or hip arthritis. We certainly help people delay the need for surgery and being able to manage their symptoms without pain relief.

We would also get them in the gym and we have access to yoga and Pilates classes in a studio for that upstairs. Low impact exercises can help with arthritis management, and we encourage people to move in our safe environment.

There are a lot myths and untruths surrounding arthritis. One of the most common myths is that it’s a condition you simply get as you age. While age does play a part, somebody who is in their 40s can suffer with arthritis while you can have an 80 year old with no pain anywhere in their body.

Effectively, arthritis in your later years is most likely due to your environment and diet as inflammation will have been created over a period of time. Regular physical activity is a crucial factor because exercise maintains joint flexibility and strength as well as helping control weight, reducing stress on joints.

A balanced diet supports well-being, while a poor dietary choices can exacerbate the risk of developing arthritis.

Another major myth that needs to be knocked down is that rest and painkillers are the answer.
Taking painkillers in the long term is actually detrimental to arthritis and detrimental to pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs can help manage symptoms initially, but they do not address the underlying cause of arthritis. Using painkillers over an extended period may mask the progression of the disease, leading to delayed treatment.

The key to improving your condition is to keep moving but people often feel pain when they are moving. The team at NK Physio has various ways of reducing pain, which don’t involve painkillers, injections, or rest.

Another myth is that arthritis is heredity and if your father or grandmother had arthritis, then you’re certain to get it too. While there is a hereditary element involved in arthritis (about 20% of cases), we know that 80% is down to where you live, what you do day-to-day, and what circumstances you’re subjected to within your environment.

Nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, air quality and how you breathe are all factors.
